The Vegan Billboard

In 2014 we started a campaign to raise money to put up a vegan billboard in Glasgow and Edinburgh. The image we designed with an illustrator is intended to challenge speciesism, asking the viewer where they draw the line between companion animals and "food" animals. After all, they all want to live. The base for our image was inspired by a cartoon designed by Animal Welfare Cartoons. We have had some great feedback on the image.

We found a billboard company with boards in Glasgow and Edinburgh, selected the locations with the most impact and crowd-funded over £1000 to pay for two billboards for two weeks each. In August and September 2015 we had one in Glasgow at a very busy junction in Anniesland, and one right outside a big tesco superstore in Edinburgh, in the car park where everyone would see it before and after doing their shopping!

It was just incredible to finally see the image up where thousands of people would view it. It was quite emotional! As well as being great for the promotion of veganism, the billboard campaign also had the effect of bringing local vegans together. It was something positive that we had worked for together, which can be very empowering and help build a sense of community and shared purpose.

We raised money again in early 2016 and had a billboard on Crow Road, Glasgow.
